Greetings, My father Robert (Bob) James McGee served aboard the U.S.S. Menard During World War II. I came accross this site while doing research for his eulogy. Unfortunately, he died December 24, 2011. I would like to hear from anyone who knew him. You may remember him as the one that could sing just like Bing Crosby. I'm interested in any stories and I would like to track his travels during "The War". He only told a few stories but I remember his description of the "head" (rather primitive) and the depth charging of a Japanese submarine. I would appreciate any responses. My deepest respect and gratitude to all of you veterans out there. Best to all.

My wife Jerry and I enjoyed the Reno Reunion 2011. It was great as usual to see some Mernard shipmates, although we missed a few who have now fallen and another who was blocked by snow in the Sierra. I thank Rudy Rutherford and his wonderful family for putting this together. Our trip to Virginia City was a highlight and this with our warm associations with the Menarders stays with us. All best, George J. Palmer, Jr, Menard Korea 1952-53.

Ahoy to all you wonderful men who served so valiantly during WWII. My step-son touted me on to your site last month. My wife is the widow of Lester D. Roth, who served on the Menard from 1945 t0 1946. He made the port call at Nagasaki in'45. He was quite proud of his time on the Menard and his service defending his beloved country. Lester passed away on Apr. 10th, 1999. He would be especialy proud of his son Lester, who retired as a LT Colonel after 31 yrs of service, including 2 tours in Vietnam, the 1st as a SSGT and the 2nd as a LT. During the Korean war, I was serving on the USS Fiske, DD 842, Jan. '51, to July '51. We used to escort APAs from Hongkong to Japan when ordered. The only one that I remember was the USS Montrose. And as a Radarman 3c, assigned to a special ops team aboard, I had the opportunity to check out the Radar footprint of all ships in the area. The Montrose had the noisiest radar that I had ever heard. I could "hear" her radar while she was still sitting at the pier in Hongkong. Your history says you guys were there at the same as the Montrose, so we probably escorted you as well. 'Well Done' to each and every one of you and may you all have "Fair and Winds and Follwing Seas" for the rest of your lives.

Hello I'm from DCS Films and the Maritime Documentation Society. Our team of exploration technical divers has recently come across one of the LCVP's from what we believe to be from the USS Menard (APA 201) in Lake Union. We are still trying to dig the rest of it out, but we are sure the "AP-201-??" is on the stern. We are still trying to get the last two numbers (or letter and number) and if anyone knows of this Higgins Boat or the past owners/history we'd love to hear from you! Thanks for the time!! Sincerely, Dan Warter

I am one of 5 daughters and a son of George P. Carpenter that served on the U.S.S. Menard. My Aunt(his sister) gave me a letter from World War II , written on U.S Navy paper, describing the aftermath of Iwo Jima, written by my father. It is one of the most cherished things I have of him. Still miss him and always will.
