Gregory Paul Griffin, 89, passed away surrounded by his loving family on April 28, 2008, in his home in Waterville. He was born on April 17, 1919, on Iron Gate Road in Pleasant Valley, Cambridge, VT. Greg was the son of the late John and Mary (O'Neill) Griffin. Greg's earlier working years were spent on farms and sugar woods in the Pleasant Valley area. He proudly served in World War II on the USS Menard. He served as Waterville selectman for 12 years. He was a member of the Masons for 65 years and a member of the American Legion Post 35 of Jeffersonville. He also worked for the Johnson Talc Mill in Johnson, Parker and Stearns in Johnson and the Manchester Lumber Mill in Waterville. Greg and his wife, Arlene, worked as a team on the family farm in Waterville, sharing school bus driving for the Waterville Elementary School during the earlier years on the family farm. Greg retired from farming in 1981. Greg was deeply loved by, and loved his family and friends. During his leisure time he enjoyed fishing, hunting, sugaring, reading and his trips with Arlene to Maine and the Glen in New Hampshire. His favorite times were those when he shared memories and stories with his family and friends. His sense of humor and gentlemanly politeness will be missed by all.

I want to thank the gentleman for sending the information regarding the U.S.S. Menard. I will complete it in my father's behalf and send a copies of 2 photos: My father and a shipmate in a U.S. Navy frame (circa 1940's) and an official photo of the ship (circa 1940's or before) along with a copy of a certificate showing that my father received several accommodations and there is also a plane that is revealed on the certificate going into the sea. I assume Japanese Kamakazi? My father was only 17 when he joined, but was only 2 months away from his 18th birthday at the time. It is was very difficult time in the U.S. and all men were needed to fight.Because of my father, my son (now 36) served as a U.S. Marine in the Gulf War. Dad has passed on, but we honored him with a Military ceremony and I have the flag that graced his coffin. My most precious possession.

I was looking for information about my grandfather. He served aboard the Menard in the early 50's I think. He never talked about it much and died about fifteen years ago. His name was Mike Svehla and was an engineman. Any info would be greatly appreciated

My Dad Was a Corpsman on the Menard from 1945 to 1946.When he passed away in 1983 I recieved some millitary currency that he had, in which there were alot of signatures of his friends whom he served with. His name was William R. Wilson. My mother tells a story of an old broke down washing machine he had and how he had some kind of raffle. If anyone remebers this I'd like to hear from you. sincerely Annie70304

My grandfather Mervine J. Mire served aboard the Menard....I wanted to let you all know that he passed away in December of 1978....

This is not a comment but rather a request to any former crew of USS Menard. My name is Frank Cadavos and I’m the eldest son of Mamerto Cadavos. Unfortunately, he died in April of 1975. However, before he died our family went through a difficult time when we lost everything in a fire incident to include my father’s US Navy service history and records. A similar request was also submitted by my sister Crisanta Cadavos Baker that was added here in your log book last October 23, 2007.
We understand that a request like this may not be so simple to undertake. But if anyone (former member of the crew) happened to know our father and may have reports or photos to share, it would be greatly appreciated. We would like to get in touch with you as well. By all means, it would be of great help to us as we put together a memorabilia of our late father Mamerto Cadavos to substantiate his WWII service with the USS Menard. Thank you for your time and we certainly look forward to hear from you. May God Bless!
