I was "Oil King" on U.S.S. Menard from recommissioning in 1950 until June 1952 when I was discharged after 1 year extension. My office was #1 cell in the brig working for Chief Tuffaro. Nice to see this U.S.S. Menard site.

I havent visited the web sight in quite some time.
The changes are notable. I went on board the Menard in November 1951. In 1952 to my discharg in 1954 I was in the post office. I would like to attend a reunion but they are to far away . Traveling is not as easy as it used to be, as you know. If any of my old friends remember me i would like to hear from you. :D

I never had the chance to meet my father but I did get the chance to meet my half sister. She sent me of beautiful photo album with a picture of my dad in his sailor uniform and shared some stories he had told her. After veiwing this log book I came across a vetran's name...Gregory P.Griffin of Watervile,VT. who says he served on the USS MENARD in 1944-46. I was wondering if he knew my father...Polo Waldor who served in 1945-46 on the USS MENARD? He had been on sea duty for 8mos. He passed away in 1999. :o

My great-uncle Donald H. May was a lieutenant aboard the Menard during her first cruise in 1944-45. I have the framed certificate presented to him when the Menard crossed the Equator and he was inducted as a shellback into King Neptune's Ancient Order of the Deep. Strangely enough, the certificate lists the date as 4 January 1944, more than 10 months before she was commissioned! They must have had some left over certificates that had been printed up earlier. Uncle Don passed away in 1985, and my mom kept the certificate, which she had inherited from him. I inherited it when my mom passed in 2003. It's a wonderful reminder of a favorite uncle.

My Father, Ronald E. Wyman sent me the information to find this website. The site is well done. I'm pleased and proud to be able to learn more about the history of the ship and of my Dad's service. Thank you.
